For ADHD founders & senior leaders

Why can't we start and finish the work?

Four things fire an ADHD brain. This page shows you which ones.

If we understand what actually drives engagement and motivation in you, we can design work systems that align with your brain.

ADHD at work really does begin with this.

Engine one

The ADHD motivation engine

Four things switch an ADHD brain on. When one of them is present, you can start without forcing it.

Driver
Interest / Curiosity / Challenge

Genuine fascination or challenge creates effortless attention for ADHDers.

The brain doesn't need to force. It's pulled towards what captivates and empowers us.

For example: the pricing model you can't stop refining, or a competitor's move you want to out-think.

Driver
Urgency / Consequences / Accountability

Pressure creates the signal strength needed for action.

Be careful: burnout can live here!

For example: the board deck the night before, or the client who's about to walk.

Driver
Novelty / Change

Fresh environments and new problems provide dopamine.

Reframing old tasks can suddenly unlock momentum.

For example: a new market to move into, or running the same quarterly review in a format that isn't stale yet.

Driver
Passion / Emotional Meaning

Connection to values, identity, care, or helping others or animals carries weight.

Emotion drives action way more powerfully than "shoulds".

For example: protecting your team through a hard quarter, or the part of the mission you started this for.

At least one of these four has to be present before you can act.

Pick something you've been putting off, like the board deck or a hiring decision you keep pushing to next week. Tap what's true for it, and watch the engine.

If nothing is true, that's why you've been putting it off.

Stalled
Even one is enough to start.
What doesn't work for ADHD

Traditional motivators fail because they're designed for neurotypical dopamine systems.

"Importance" without urgency
Delayed rewards ("you'll benefit later")
Discipline, grind and willpower alone
"Just try harder" approaches
Engine two

The autistic motivation engine

30%+

Maybe your brain has a little autism in the mix too? More than 30% of ADHDers are somewhere on the autistic spectrum. This engine runs on a different fuel.

Driver
Meaning / Coherence

Clear logic and internal consistency matter profoundly.

Understanding the "why" enables engagement. Arbitrary tasks collapse motivation entirely.

Driver
Values / Integrity

Alignment with personal values drives action.

Doing what's right, accurate, fair, or well-designed often outweighs external approval.

Driver
Mastery / Competence

Progress towards skill, precision, or depth provides satisfaction.

Getting something right matters, even without external recognition.

Driver
Predictability / Safety

Stable environments with clear expectations reduce cognitive load.

Chaos, ambiguity, or social risk rapidly drain motivational energy.

Engine three

The AuDHD motivation engine

The two engines overlap. The spot where an AuDHD brain will actually start is narrow, and it might look something like this.

Blend
Meaningful Interest

It makes sense and it's engaging.

Fascinating but pointless causes autistic resistance. Meaningful but dull causes ADHD drag.

Blend
Emotional Relevance without Chaos

Care and values, held inside something stable.

Shame and social pressure shut everything down completely.

Blend
Novelty within Structure

Fresh angles inside known containers.

Pure novelty destabilises. Pure routine deadens the spirit.

Blend
Safety to Act, Urgency to Start

Low-threat and time-bound.

Clear scope, defined outcomes, without any identity risk.

The short version

The key differences

When motivation stalls, it signals missing elements, never personal failure.

ADHD

Pulled by stimulation. Novelty, urgency and emotion get you moving.

Autism

Pulled by sense-making. Coherence, logic and integrity get you moving.

AuDHD

Needs interest, coherence, safety and a gentle push, all at the same time.

Want to build your work around your engine?

This is the work I do with ADHD and AuDHD founders and senior leaders. We find what actually drives you, then shape the work around it.
